The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Health Information Exchanges

Health information exchanges (HIEs) offer a significant opportunity for health and human services to streamline and automate workflows and care coordination; especially when empowered with artificial intelligence models that support automation. Today, very few health information exchanges leverage the power of artificial intelligence to support their member agencies and the patients they serve. Health Information Exchanges that use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery include:

The Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC): SHIEC is a national trade association that promotes health information exchanges across the United States. SHIEC is working with partners to develop an AI-powered HIE platform that uses machine learning algorithms to help healthcare providers identify patients who are at high risk of developing certain conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes.

Healthcare Access San Antonio (HASA): HASA is an HIE in Texas that is using AI to improve patient care coordination. HASA is working with partners to develop an AI-powered platform that uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to analyze unstructured clinical data, such as physician notes and lab results. This helps providers identify high-risk patients and improve care coordination.

The Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO): CORHIO is an HIE in Colorado that is using AI to improve patient outcomes. CORHIO is working with partners to develop an AI-powered platform that uses predictive analytics to identify patients who are at high risk of developing certain conditions, such as sepsis or heart failure. This helps providers intervene earlier and improve patient outcomes.

The Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN): MiHIN is an HIE in Michigan that is using AI to improve the accuracy and completeness of patient data. MiHIN is working with partners to develop an AI-powered platform that uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to analyze clinical documents and identify missing or inaccurate information. This helps providers make more informed clinical decisions and improve patient outcomes.

Overall, AI is being used in various ways by HIEs to improve patient outcomes, care coordination, and the efficiency of healthcare delivery. As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect to see more HIEs adopting these tools to improve healthcare delivery.
