Refugees and asylum seekers have unique experiences that require specialized approaches to meet their cultural, linguistic and trauma needs while navigating complex eligibility criteria. Refugees are one of our nation’s most vulnerable populations given their legal status and accompanying limitations to self-direct care and/or access resources. Moreover, there is a lack of cultural competency among providers to address health literacy, gender roles, traditional healing practices, patient engagement, shared decision making etc. often found among refugee communities. The impact of these factors is often magnified by the effects of poverty, the acculturation process, and the significant complex trauma that precipitated refugees and asylum seekers to migrate to the United States in the first place. These factors necessitate sophisticated interventions delivered through exceptionally LEAN systems to maximize the impact of woefully underfunded programs.
Hess III Consulting helps payers, providers, vendors and investors of refugee health services to design, implement and optimize programs and services that produce equitable health outcomes. We leverage our tools and intelligence to braid funding and meet the needs of refugees and asylum seekers where they are. We have worked to advanced refugee health since our inception – initially designing independent living programs for refugees in supported housing programs. Since then, we have designed funding proposals for the World Bank, spearheaded policy initiatives at the State and Federal levels, and optimized services for tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors.
